BANDON

DISTILLERY

A distillery for all your needs.

About Us

Bandon Irish Single Malt Whiskey, a premium Irish Single Malt Whiskey rooted in the heritage of the original Allman’s Bandon Distillery founded in 1825.

There are very few authentic Irish whiskey brands that can be restored and brought back to life, making this a rare opportunity to recreate premium single malt that will excite whiskey enthusiasts and consumers.

The whiskey will be made in the traditional way at its own dedicated malt whiskey distillery at a site close to the town of Bandon and the original Bandon Distillery.

The flavour of the whiskey will be richer and more complex than the existing Irish Malt whiskies. A team of industry experts will create the distillery and the whiskey taste profile.

Our History

There is a charming tale behind the founding of Allman’s Bandon Distillery. It was rumoured that in 1820 the founder’s mother was blessed after saving a priest’s life. The priest, Father Collins, was being pursued by an Orange crowd when she kindly offered him refuge for three days at her house. Father Collins was eternally thankful and to show his gratitude he prayed that her children ‘may make riches out of water’.

Almost 30 years later in 1826, after the failure of the family cotton manufacturing business, James C. Allman decided to convert one of their cotton mills into a whiskey distillery. So Allman’s Bandon distillery was born, drawing water and eventually wealth from the beautiful River Bandon.

Allman’s Bandon Distillery rapidly became one of the most prosperous in Ireland. Bandon Whiskey was exported all over the world, particularly to the UK and America. With such an impressive reputation both locally and internationally, Bandon Distillery grew to be the largest in Ireland outside of Dublin and Cork City and was reported to be exporting over half a million gallons annually.

In the mid-1880’s Alfred Barnard, a British brewing and distilling historian wrote “Messrs Allman & Co make both Old Pot Still Whiskey, designated Irish and Pure Malt Whiskey, both of superior quality.’’ He was very impressed by the workings and running of the distillery, as well as the beautiful countryside surrounding the town of Bandon.

As well as being as being a national treasure, Bandon Distillery was a great resource in the community. At times the distillery employed more than 400 people and used barley predominately from local farmers, providing a consistent source of income for hundreds of nearby residents.

Unfortunately, the Irish whiskey industry, which had thrived during the 19th century was hit by a perfect storm in the 1920’s. Prohibition in America, loss of access to British markets post-independence, and the Great Depression all crippled the industry. As a result, most distilleries in Ireland (North and South) closed and ultimately the industry was effectively nationalised as Irish distillers. The beloved Bandon Distillery stopped distilling in 1925 and closed in 1929, leaving a hole in the local community and global whiskey trade.

The rich history of the Bandon Distillery is still treasured by many, and we are on a mission to revive this iconic brand. Bandon Distillery will be reborn, and the fresh waters of the River Bandon will once again be used to produce a delicious authentic malt whiskey.

The demand for Irish whiskey has skyrocketed in recent years, making it the fastest growing premium spirit in the world. The market growth, coupled with the legacy of the Allman & Co Distillery represents a unique opportunity for the revival of Bandon Distillery to produce and sell premium Irish malt whiskey.
